Veteran unemployment numbers could rise with military budget cuts

Nearly 5,000 veterans in Michiana are unemployed, and with the U.S. making massive military cuts, unemployment numbers for vets could go up.

Back in February, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced the Pentagon was shrinking our military to pre-World War II levels, and it's doing this for budgetary reasons.

Work One employment services says there are nearly 40,000 veterans in the Michiana area and 5,000 of them are unemployed. With vets scheduled to return home, the unemployment line could be longer than ever. Work One is trying to combat that. Manager Chuck Knebl says, "Our veteran staff is working on trying to set up internships with veterans and businesses where Work One will pay part of the salary of the veteran with the business. So they're just trying to make those connections."

Troops will be cut from 520,000 to 450,000. Work One says they counsel about 200 veterans a month for job placement. They also have a "Vet to Vet Networking Group" that meets weekly in South Bend and Elkhart.
