Boy Scouts leading food drive in Michiana

Posted:

It is common to hear about food drives and other charity collections during the holiday season, but families need help year round.  Area Boy Scouts are working to make sure food pantries are well stocked now.

The "Scouting for Food Drive" is Saturday across Michiana.  Scouts in LaPorte, Starke, St. Joseph, Marshall, Porter, Elkhart, Cass, and Berrien Counties will be gathering food donations.  All the donations stay in the district they are collected in, so the food helps local families.

"We want our Scouts to make an impact in their communities by helping others," explains Algonquin District Director Tom Hoogland, "and we want our Scouts to begin learning that community service is a responsibility to be embraced throughout their lives.  The Scouting for Food Drive is a wonderful example of both."

In South Bend, you can drop off non-perishable food items at the LaSalle Council of the Boy Scouts of America Headquarter between 9:00am and 1:00pm on Saturday.  The headquarters is at 1340 South Bend Ave.

Church Community Services in Elkhart County is also hosting a drop-off location.  You can donate food there from 10:00am to noon on Saturday at the 907 Oakland Ave location.
