John Young Middle School holds ISTEP+ Kickoff event

Posted:

Students at John Young Middle School spent their Friday afternoon having some fun with their fellow students, teachers and staff. The school held an ISTEP+ Kickoff event for their 7th and 8th grade students. The idea behind the event was for the school to show their appreciation to their students for all of the hard work they have put in leading up to the exams.

The event included a relay race, musical chairs, a three-legged race, and the crowd favorite: letting students throw pies in their teacher's faces. In between the activities there was also time dedicated to reminding the students of good test taking habits. This was the first year that an event this big was held for the students. Organizers say they plan on making the kickoff an annual event.

The Indiana education system has been in the spotlight recently with Common Core having been voted out of school curriculums. Teachers at the school say that they are not being distracted from helping their students focus on the upcoming exam.

"I think a lot of times when you have a situation like we are here in Indiana it can affect a lot of different aspects of the whole organization as a whole, but I think us as a staff, staying focus and letting our students know that we are supporting them," 7th/8th grade English teacher Kory LaBonne said.

Students will begin testing on Tuesday, March 11.
