Oregon-Davis wins state title

Oregon-Davis started the season as the #1 ranked team in class 1A and that is where they will finish, because the Bobcats are the 2014 1A Girls Basketball State Champions.

"You can only dream of it, but to actually experience it means so much more," said Oregon-Davis senior guard Ashley Campbell.

The Bobcats beat Vincennes-Rivet 69-64 in the 1A State Championship game in Terre Haute to capture Oregon-Davis's second girls basketball title in school history.

Campbell led the way for the Cats with an 1A State Title record 35 points. Campbell also finished the game with 6 assists.

"She's an all-star in my book," said head coach Terry Minix. "Hopefully in everybody else's book too."

The Bobcats got an additional 16 points from senior Jessica Avarone, who shot 4-6 from behind the arc.

"It feels amazing," said Avarone. "I'm just so happy right now."

For the six seniors winning the state championship was not just something they wanted to accomplish for themselves. Just a few years ago the girls lost their close friend and team manager Christina Rotering to cancer. The girls hope she's in heaven celebrating with tears of joys like they are.

"She's not physically with us, but she's with us in our hearts," said senior Kendra Sauer. "I don't think she could be more proud.

Hoisting the state trophy was very special for the Minix family. Head coach Terry's daughter, Lexi, is a sophomore on this year's Oregon-Davis team. Terry won a state title with his two older daughters in 2007, but now the whole family can consider themselves champions.

"This is the most amazing feeling of my entire life," said Lexi.

Oregon-Davis will hold a pep rally Sunday afternoon at 1:00PM central time to celebrate the girl's basketball team's incredible season.
