Governor approves end to Benton Harbor financial emergency

Governor Rick Snyder has accepted Benton Harbor Emergency Manager Tony Saunders' recommendation to end the financial emergency status in Benton Harbor. On Monday, he appointed a transition team to help move the city out of receivership.

"This is an important day for the residents of the city of Benton Harbor," the governor said in a written statement.  "I'm pleased to be able to accept Tony Saunders' recommendation that the financial emergency has been sufficiently addressed. With authority being returned to local control, this Transition Advisory Board will work cooperatively with local leaders to ensure continued financial stability and growth in the city and ensure the essential services that citizens need and rely on."

Benton Harbor has been under emergency financial management from the state since April, 2010.  Tony Saunders took over as emergency manager a year ago.  Saunders put a two-year budget into effect on Thursday. He issued his final order as emergency manager on Friday.

The governor has appointed four people to serve on a Receivership Transition Advisory Board.  They are Audit Manager with the Michigan Department of Treasury Cary Vaughn, Berrien County Treasurer Bret Witkowski, and former Whirlpool Corporation managers Sharon Hunt and MArvin Region.

"These very knowledgeable individuals will work collaboratively with the mayor and commission to facilitate the transition back to full local control," said Snyder.
