Streets Departments tackle potholes

Warmer weather means crews are out and about fixing as many potholes as they can. South Bend Streets Department, Mishawaka Streets Department, Elkhart Streets Department, and INDOT say they are working around the clock to fix potholes before the expected snowfall hits Wednesday.

Mishawaka Streets Department manager Tim Ryan says crews hit the pavement Sunday night, and are planning to work until the first snowflake drops. That's when crews will transform from fixing potholes to plowing the streets. South Bend Streets Department manager John Pemberton, Jr. says they plan on doing the same thing.

All crews say they are focused on the major arteries, the hard hit roads going in and out of the cities. Next, they will move to minor arteries, roads that are used a little less than the main travel roads. Pemberton says they will then tackle residential potholes on a call basis. He says they try to fill the holes within 48 hours of a call made to the 311 hotline.
