What a difference a few days makes with ice cover on Lake Michigan, especially when some of them are sunny and warm.

On Saturday, the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory reported ice on Lake Michigan hit a record of 93.29 percent, breaking the 93.1 percent record set in 1977.

By Tuesday morning, ice cover on Lake Michigan had dropped more than 17 percent to 76.1 percent.

While Lake Michigan broke an all-time ice coverage record, the Great Lakes as a whole have come up short. On Thursday, coverage hit a high of 92.2 percent, second only to the 94.7 percent high hit in 1979. On Monday, the most recent day date is available, the total had dropped to 83.9 percent.
