Penn's Geist gives his dad an ultimatum

When Penn junior Jordan Geist helped lead the Kingsmen to a sectional title, he put his father Scott in an awkward position.

"[My dad] is an [assistant principal] at a Concord School, and we play Concord," said Jordan. "But he definitely better be rooting for me or we're going to have some battles there."

As if that weren't weird enough for Scott, Concord and Penn are not just playing for bragging rights. The Minutemen and Kingsmen are playing each other in the Regional Semi-Final of the IHSAA tournament.

"I want to be loyal to the school system, they play the bills," said Scott. "But I got my son playing for Penn."

So you could say sitting at his Concord Intermediate desk this week will be a bit awkward, since it's pretty obvious which side Scott will choose come game time.

"Somebody walks into my office and says 'hey why do you have Penn on the wall, what's up with that?' Of course I say my kid's first. My kid's first all the time," said Scott.

Basketball is something that has kept Jordan and Scott close for most of their lives. In fact, Jordan gives a lot of credit to his dad for helping develop into one of the best players in Michiana.

"He's definitely been one of my biggest motivators. Taking me to AAU tournaments and taking me to go shoot in the mornings," said Jordan.

Some of that development included some father-son games of one on one.

"The one thing I have on him is I'm undefeated," said Scott.

While Geist conceded that he's never beat his dad, he was quick to point out a facet of the game his father left out.

"Last time he did cheap shot me," said Geist. "So I do have to count that as a win for me, but I'll have to get him sometime soon."

While Scott might not want to see his own son beat him in a game, he won't mind if Jordan beats Concord Saturday.

Even if it would make his Monday morning meeting rather a bit uncomfortable.

"I want Penn to win," said Scott. "When Jordan goes away then obviously I'm a Concord fan all the way."

Penn and Concord will play Saturday afternoon in the Michigan City 4A Regional Semi-Final. The winner of that game will play in the Regional Championship at 8:00PM Saturday night.
