Winter weather causing power outages in Michiana

Posted:

Thousands of Michiana residents were without power Wednesday due to weather-related problems.

Heavy winds and snow all affected power lines throughout Michiana service areas during the morning, and falling trees, weakened by hours of snowfall, have resulted in additional outages throughout the day.

Indiana & Michigan Power had over 1400 customers experiencing outages in the area and over 3600 in the mid-afternoon, primarily in Southwest Michigan:

  • 115 without power in South Bend
  • 61 in Granger
  • 162 in Mishawaka
  • 242 in Elkhart
  • 1914 in Coloma, MI
  • 103 in Berrien Springs

NIPSCO reported over 7000 outages in the area earlier Wednesday morning, but now project the following totals:

  • 35 in Goshen
  • 48 in Middlebury
  • 130 in Plymouth
  • 64 in Wakarusa
  • 38 in Nappanee
  • 73 in Warsaw
  • 1770 in Syracuse

Midwest Energy Cooperative reported a little over 370 customers without power, with over 150 in the Dowagiac area lacking service during the day, but has since resolved those issues.

Additionally, Kankakee Valley REMC experienced a large scale transmission feed outage due to snow and ice buildup. Over 6400 customers were without power at one point, but that number shrank to 1600 as of noon, and was under 150 by mid-afternoon.

FOX28 will provide updates as they become available.
