40 Pigeons found in barn of man found dead in North Liberty

The St. Joseph County Humane Society has an unusual case involving pigeons on their hands.

It started after Hugh Lambert was found dead in his North Liberty home. When officials arrived on the scene, they discovered 40 pigeons inside a barn on the property. The pigeons belonged to Lambert, and they weren't just ordinary pigeons.  They were racing pigeons.

Currently, the Humane Society is caring for the birds, along with the help of Lambert's friends from his pigeon club. St. Joseph County Police are still waiting to hear back from the family members of Lambert, to try and figure out what to do with the birds. If family members do not want to care for the pigeons, the Pigeon Club says they will take custody of them.

We spoke to Executive Director of the Humane Society Dr. Carol Ecker who received the call from authorities about the pigeons. She says it's not unusual to find pigeons housed on rural properties, and pigeon racing is something that is very popular in the area. She says it is especially popular in Hungarian and Polish culture.

Before Lambert was found dead, he ordered two pigeons to add to his racing team. The St. Joseph County humane society picked up the birds from the local post office. They, along with other members from Lambert's racing club, set the birds free in the pigeon loft on Thursday.
