Mishawaka will clear snow covered traffic lights after saying they wouldn't

Thursday night, Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood said he'd asked Mishawaka Utilities to get crews busy clearing snow covered traffic lights.

That's after we were told for two days in a row by the City Engineering Department that they could do nothing about the problem.

Traffic lights across Michiana were covered in snow after Wednesday's storm.

There was a crash a driver involved says was caused by a snow-covered traffic light in Elkhart Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday, the Elkhart Mayor's Department told us the city is working to clean snow off traffic lights.

The City of South Bend told us the same thing: they've been using cherry pickers since Tuesday to clear the snow covered traffic lights.  However, on Thursday, the Mishawaka Engineering Department told us there was "no quick fix" to the problem of traffic lights covered in snow.  The department said it comes down to "money, time, man power, and availability of equipment."

Just a few hours later, Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood said Mishawaka Utilities crews would be working Thursday night to clean the snow off their traffic lights.  Mayor Wood said the City of Mishawaka has a contract with Mishawaka Utilities for their streetlights, so the city could not use their equipment to clean the lights because that would break the contract.  Instead, the power company became part of the fix.  "This afternoon I had a conversation with our electric superintendent," said Mayor Wood. "First of all, we had to make sure we had the personnel, the man power, the equipment that we could assign to this task. So, we worked through that this afternoon."
