Heat shut-off amnesty period ending in Indiana tomorrow

Posted:

Residents throughout the State of Indiana have endured an intense winter of snow, ice, and cold weather. That has meant that heating where your live is a high priority. That may become an issue for some residents as the state utility moratorium is set to end.

The heating season for gas and electric companies runs from December 1 through March 15. The state places a moratorium on shutoffs for families in need during that time.  If bills aren't paid starting Monday, utility companies can shut off heat for residents.

The Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) provides natural gas to nearly 800,000 customers and electricity to another 450,000 people. NIPSCO provides a number of payment assistant plans to residents who fall within the federal poverty guidelines. The two NIPSCO recommends are LIHEAP and the CARE Discount Program.

According to their website, "Payments must be reported by 10:00pm on the day before the scheduled termination date to avoid shut-off." There is also a list of agencies throughout Indiana that can help people apply for assistance.

In a news release from NIPSCO, the company says that residents call regardless of what their situation may be in order to receive some sort of help or guidance if they are expecting their heat to be turned off.
