First responders recall SB plane crash at trauma symposium

One year ago this coming Monday, a plane crashed into a South Bend neighborhood, killing two people on board.

As we get close to the anniversary of the Iowa Street plane crash, first responders held a panel discussion Saturday on what they learned from that experience.

It's part of Memorial Hospital's Trauma Symposium.

The incident commander at the crash told us the situation could have been a lot worse.

"Nobody got hurt at this incident." says South Bend Fire Department Battalion Chief, Mark Catanzarite. "All the firefighters and none of the patients that were still trapped in the wreckage of the airplane or in the house next door were injured as a result of any kind of a flash fire or anything like that."

First responders say they learned that training for such a response is obviously important, even though they may have never thought something like that would happen here.

They also stress the importance of communication between all the agencies and parties involved when responding.
