Troubled youth have more options in St. Joseph County

Troubled youth looking for a safe place to go now have more options.  Monday morning local officials gathered in South Bend to kick off National Safe Place Week.

In St. Joseph County there are more than 140 different places that young people can go for help.  South Bend Regional Airport is one of them, as well as many local fire stations.

Officials at National Safe Place say the problem is bigger than some realize:

  • Over 1,000 youth are homeless or runaways in St. Joseph County
  • Nationwide around 2.8 million teens run away from home each year
  • Nationwide around 1.6 million youth have spent at least one night outdoors in the past 12 months

Organizers say they want troubled youth to know that there is a place they can turn to.  "Go to a safe place site and get professional help.  Do not spend a night on the streets because it's very, very dangerous," said Bonnie Strycker the Executive Director at the Youth Service Bureau.
