21 South Bend homes will be receiving repairs, free of charge

Rebuilding Together is celebrating its 26th project year by rehabilitating 21 homes in the Near Northwest, Lincoln Park neighborhood in South Bend.  Rebuilding Together plans to do repairs, such as replacing at least 14 roofs and complete exterior painting at 11 homes this year at no cost to the homeowner.  The homes are owned by elderly or disabled residents who can not make repairs on their own.

One homeowner benefiting from the project, Helen DuPriest, is overly grateful to be receiving this help on her home.  "These improvements mean everything," DuPriest said, "because I wouldn't have been able to do it on my own."  She has been in need of a new roof for 25 years.

South Bend Deputy Mayor, Mark Neal says this project not only beautifies the neighborhood, but also secures safe secure housing.  "Here in South Bend, everyone takes pride in their neighborhood," Neal said, "and we have so many wonderful neighborhoods, and some where people are having some challenges maintaining their homes to a level they would like to.  Isn't this a great way for the community to come out and work on a focused effort to take the neighborhood a nicer place?"

An estimated 750 volunteers will make repairs on Saturday, April 5 (Skilled Trades Day), and Saturday, April 12 (Community Volunteer Day).  Those interested in volunteering for the 2014 Rebuilding Together project may call (574)235-9371 to sign up.
