Push for health care sign-ups as deadline approaches

Posted:

The push is on to get people signed up for health insurance before the March 31st deadline set by the Affordable Care Act.

Heart City Health Center shared enrollment numbers for Indiana and Michigan with FOX28.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, 64,972 people have enrolled in Marketplace plans in Indiana. That's out of 145,189 people who are eligible.

In Michigan, 144,587 people have enrolled out of 313,644 who are eligible.

With the deadline approaching, members of the Canaan Baptist Church took advantage of help from trained Affordable Care Act navigators to sign up for health insurance.  McNeal Stewart is the pastor at Canaan Baptist Church. He said, "I'm shopping the prices between what the church is able to do and versus what is in the marketplace now."

Plans are different for everyone, in terms of price and coverage.  It's the job of the navigator to help enrollees to find the most affordable plan to meet their needs.

Patricia Halling, an ACA Navigator said, "It's kind of like doing your taxes. If you don't understand it, it can be frightening and overwhelming. Everybody that I've helped has just been so appreciative, saying, 'Oh my goodness. I'm so glad there was somebody out here.'"

With the deadline approaching, navigators say more and more people are coming to sessions, like these, to get signed up for health insurance. It's a sign that the message is getting out.

"In the last week, week and a half, it has just exploded," said Halling.

Navigators said they'll be busy the next couple weeks getting as many people signed up as possible.
