Vote on new education standards delayed

Posted: Updated:

A vote on final changes to Indiana's new education standards is set for the week of April 28.

The Indianapolis Star reports the State Board of Education has delayed the vote from the April 9 meeting it originally was set for.

The delay gives more time to analyze more than 2,000 comments posted on the math and English standards before submitting a final proposal. It also will mean less time for teachers to adjust lesson plans for fall classes.

A spokeswoman for the Center for Education and Career Innovation, another education body crafting the standards, says no further delays are expected.

Legislation passed last year called for new standards amid growing criticism of Indiana's use of national education standards known as Common Core.
