Benton Harbor basketball team says no to pep rally

The Benton Harbor boy's basketball team has their eye on a state title this weekend. The team will travel to Michigan State University and play Cadillac on Friday as a part of the Final Four. The winner of that game will play for the championship on Saturday.  

Senior forward Darrell Moss says their state title run has been a bright spot in Benton Harbor. "It's finally something positive happening for the community instead of everything being negative on the news," he said.  

This is the first time the Benton Harbor boy's team has been in the Final Four since 1993. A number of members from that team have been passing advice along to this year's squad. 

Stevie Archibald was an assistant coach for the 1992-93 season. "We are trying to get the kids to understand that if you make a run this time, it will be just as big," Archibald said. "It will rally the community. It would be exciting and so far it's been that way."

Freddie McGee is an assistant coach this year but has ties to the 1993 state runner-up team. He was the camera man for the Tigers.  "We're just reminding our kids that you're doing something that's going to be vital." 

The 2014 Tigers team decided to go an unconventional route for their sendoff. Most teams host a pep rally or assembly of some kind before the team leaves. However, seniors for Benton Harbor asked their coach that Thursday afternoon's assembly be postponed.  

"Last year when we had pep rallies and stuff, it seemed like we always would lose or something," Moss said. "We were too hyped during the pep rally, but this year we haven't had one, and we've been winning." 

"I think pep rallies are bad luck. I'm very superstitious," senior guard John Robinson said. "I told coach 'Don't have one.' Just wait until we win it all and then we can have one on Monday or something." 

Friday's game will be played at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. The game against Cadillac is scheduled for 6:00pm.  If Benton Harbor wins, they will play in the Class B Championship at 6:30pm on Saturday.
