Concert will be held at Goshen College to benefit Ukraine

Posted:

With all eyes on the conflict in Ukraine, Goshen College Music Professor Solomia Soroka plans on helping any way she can. Soroka and her husband, Arthur Greene, will perform in a benefit recital for the people of Ukraine.

Soroka was born in Ukraine and still has family there. Her son, Theo Kuchar, says the family usually visits the country every summer, making the situation hard for the family. "I mean it's been a really big deal. Not just for her but for our whole family. We've been worrying about this," he said. "We've all been doing everything we can to pitch in."

Solomia's student Peter Paetkau says that Soroka has remained professional in classroom even though he knows how much the conflict is weighing on her. That is why he says the concert is necessary. "To have a representation where there's public support for the people who are participating in the crisis right now I think is very important," he said.

Music Department Chair at Goshen College Beverly Lapp says Saturday's concert has been schedule for over a year.  "I think she had a different program in mind at one point, but about a month ago said, 'It just feels right to play Ukrainian music right now.'"

Kuchar says the concert is meant to bring awareness to everyone and not just people with ties to Ukraine. "It's a world issue. It's about preserving peace and stability in the world economy and with just foreign relations everywhere. So, I think it's important even if there wasn't a big Ukrainian community here in Goshen."

The money raised will go to foundations that aim to help victims and families in Ukraine. "You do what you can to support the people that you love and your country," Kuchar said.

People are encouraged to give a donation of at least $10. The concert is being held at the Goshen College Music Center in the Rieth Recital Hall. It starts at 7:30pm and is expected to run about 90 minutes. Soroka will also take some time to speak about the Ukrainian music played. Soroka was not in Goshen Friday afternoon because she was returning from a concert in South Carolina.
