UPDATE: Pedestrian killed in Elkhart crash, driver says "it happened so fast"

Elkhart police say a pedestrian was killed when he was hit by a car, Saturday afternoon.

It happened around 12:30 in the 2200 block of Cassopolis Street.

Police say the pedestrian passed away from his injuries. He was identified as 72-year-old Joe Scroggins of Elkhart.

FOX28 spoke to the woman who says she was the driver who hit Scroggins. Police have identified her as 35-year-old Elizabeth McDaniel of Edwardsburg, MI. McDaniel said the crash was accidental.

She says she was heading south when all of a sudden, her windshield smashed. She looked in her rearview mirror and saw a man on the ground.

"I didn't see him cross in front of me. I didn't see where he was coming from. It happened so fast," McDaneil said. "I am very, very, very sorry."

The road was closed in both directions for several hours.
