ND's McGraw looks for winning pedigree

The Notre Dame women's basketball team has taken a winning attitude into every game this season, which they say has helped them out to an undefeated season.

The team believes that winning spirit didn't start this year, because most of the girls on the team came from a pedigree of state championships before they came to campus.

"We have looked at all of our recruits and thought that people that know how to win, win state championships, compete for state titles, they have AAU teams that are successful at a high level, I think it's really important that they know how to win and come from a winning culture and they're going to bring that [to Notre Dame]," said ND head coach Muffet McGraw.

The players agree that having a locker room where success is expected dating back to their days in high school has helped this season.

"I think that it helped a lot," said Madison Cable, a Notre Dame guard who won three state championships in high school. "I had that winning mentality and just drive to win and work hard everyday in practice with my teammates. I had that before I came to Notre Dame and everybody already has that mentality so we're already a step ahead of other teams."

No surprise that the team's leading scorer Kayla McBride also had a successful prep career. The Notre Dame senior won two state titles in Pennsylvania.

"[Winning a championship is] definitely a journey and it takes a lot of toughness mentally to get there game in and game out. You don't want to take anybody for granted and it's kind of similar to this right now. Especially as a senior knowing that the ultimate prize is a National Championship and staying mentally prepared," said McBride.

Notre Dame hopes their winning mentality can help them beat Arizona State Monday night to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.
