Flu-like hog virus sweeping Indiana, US

Posted: Updated:

Agriculture officials say a fast-moving virus has infected hogs across Indiana and the nation since it was introduced on American soil less than a year ago.

The Indiana State Board of Animal Health reports porcine epidemic diarrhea virus has infected farms in at least 43 Indiana counties. The National Animal Health Laboratory Network indicates 26 other states have reported cases.

Pork production manager Sam Moffitt of Kewanna-based Northwind Pork LLC tells the Logansport Pharos-Tribune the flu-like virus forces producers to wean piglets as young as 8 days old from sick sows. The animals recover.

Uncertainty over losses has helped send hog futures soaring. Purdue University data show prices for spring and summer contracts have reached $112 per hundredweight for March through August, compared with $88 per hundredweight a year ago.
