Elkhart County Sheriff's Department hunting police impersonator

Posted:

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department is warning residents of a police impersonator that could be operating in the area.

They say a woman was pulled over Monday night by a man in a small white passenger car.  The woman said the car did have a red and white flashing light.  She told police man got out of the car wearing baggy blue jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt who told her she was speeding.

She asked for proof that the man was a police officer, but he didn't have any.  Police say the woman immediately drove away and called 911.  Police say that is exactly what you should do in a similar situation.

The Sheriff's Department says that, in Indiana, any law enforcement pulling you over will have red and blue flashing lights.  Even if the vehicle is not fully marked, police say officers will be in a uniform clearly identifying them as a law enforcement official.

Police searched the area for the impersonator, but say he had fled the area before they arrived.

If you have any information about this incident, you are asked to text "ECSDTip" and your tip to 847411, or post your tip online at www.elkhartcountysheriff.com or on their Facebook page. If you don't have access to the internet or texting, you can also call the Sheriff's Department at (574) 533-4151.
