Elkhart loses more trees due to bug infestation

Bugs are forcing Elkhart officials to chop down some trees.

The Ash Borer, an insect that originates in Asia, has wreaked havoc on Ash trees.  Tuesday morning crews were at the American Park in Elkhart taking down several trees.

In the American Park alone city officials say they've lost over 50 trees.  Forestry officials say they don't have many other options.

"The loss from the Emerald Ash Borer here in the city are about 20 percent of our street trees  It's really hitting us hard," says Daniel Coy, the City Forester.

More trees are being planted to compensate for the loss.  This spring around 300 trees will be planted with more coming in the fall.
