Local officials urge folks to sign up for healthcare

Only six days left to sign up for healthcare.  That was the message Tuesday morning at Memorial Hospital.  Local leaders gathered with hospital officials urging folks to sign up.

They also wanted to stress that if you do not sign up, there could be penalties.

"There is still time to shop and buy what's best for you and your family after that there is a penalty that applies if you do not have health insurance with a list of exceptions to that and that will be due the following year," says Kathleen Falk of the Department of Health.

South Bend Deputy Mayor Mark Neal was in attendance.  Neal stressed that this is a great option for everyone, even young people, who do not have any health coverage.

The Department of Health says there are almost one million people in the Hoosier state who have not signed up for the Affordable Care Act.
