UPDATE: Police locate suspect, damaged vehicle in deadly hit-and-run

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office says a 17-year-old remains in custody in connection to Monday evening's deadly hit and run accident in South Bend.

Capt. Tim Spencer with the St. Joseph County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (F.A.C.T.) tells FOX28 that a Crimestoppers tip led them to a house in the 300 block of West Main Street in Niles Tuesday evening. At the home, Niles Police found a car that matched the description of the car police were looking for.

Police tell us a 17-year-old boy admitted to being involved in the accident. On Wednesday, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office filed what is called a delinquency petition in juvenile court and a request he remain in detention. The petition alleges the teen committed an act which, if committed by an adult, would be considered Failure to Stop After an Accident resulting in Death, a felony.

The teen continues to be held at the Juvenile Justice Center and has a hearing scheduled for April 2.

FOX28 is not naming the suspect since he is not currently charged as an adult.
