Metro Homicide investigating arrest that ended in an injured suspect

Posted:

A man is in the hospital and County Metro Homicide is investigating after an altercation with police at a South Bend home Tuesday night.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office says a South Bend Police officer tried to pull over 55-year-old Thomas Stevens around 10:30pm.  He didn't stop, so police followed him home and tried to arrest him there.

Authorities have not specifically said what happened next, but say Stevens was injured and taken to an area hospital for treatment.  He is in police custody there facing preliminary charges of resisting arrest and battery to an officer.

The prosecutor says Stevens' mother, Suzanne, was arrested in the incident as well.  She was also booked on preliminary charges of resisting arrest and battery to an officer.

Metro Homicide is investigating the arrest, because it ended in what prosecutors are calling "serious injury to the suspect." The officer involved has not been identified.

The Prosecutor's Office says official charges have not been filed against Thomas or Suzanne Stevens.  They have 48 hours to make a decision on what charges, if any, will be filed.  They say they will make a decision after they get a report on Metro Homicide's investigation.
