Cass County resident frustrated by potholes on Elkhart Rd

Posted:

The winter Northwest Indiana experienced is one that will not easily be forgotten. If the remaining snow is not enough of a reminder, the potholes scattered all throughout Michiana will do the trick.

Cass County has been no different, and one resident shared his frustrations. Russ Carey lives in Cass County and says the potholes on Elkhart Rd. between Redfield St. and May St. are dangerous to drivers. "There's no way to travel the road without hitting any major potholes anywhere," he said.

He says drivers must either drive off the entire road or move into the other lane to avoid them. "It'd be better off dirt to be honest with you," Carey said.  "It'd be a lot safer."

He decided that he would make his feelings known to all the drivers on Elkhart Rd. by posting a sign that read, "Cass Co. Street Dept. Pride Tax $$." Carey says he was inspired by his father who had done something similar to his action. "My dad did a sign, like this, in South Bend years ago, and that's what gave me the idea," Carey said.  "Something like this will bring attention to it where somebody will do something about it."

Chief Engineer of Cass County Road Commission Joe Bellina says they are aware of the pothole situation on Elkhart Rd. "We've gone out there and put a 'Rough Road' sign up and an advisory speed limit on Elkhart to help motorists know that conditions are poor in that section. And they should be on the lookout." Drivers are asked to reduce speeds to 25 miles per hour.

Crews have not been able to fill the potholes because of the combination of snow and rain over the last week. Bellina is asking for patience as his crews make their way to fix the streets. "It's hard to do this time of year, but we've got many roads that are like that. And there's light on the horizon for these folks," Bellina said. He says there are plans to repair and reconstruct the road in May.

The Cass County Road Commission gets its funding from fuel tax and license plate fees. Funds do not come from property taxes. Carey says he did not contact the Cass County Road Commission.
