Indiana unemployment drops to 6.1 percent

Posted:

The number of unemployed Hoosiers has dropped below 200,000 for the first time since August 2008.

Numbers released Friday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development show the state's unemployment rate dropped .2 percent to 6.1 percent in February. It is the first time in a decade Indiana's rate is more than one-half of a percent below the federal rate, which stands at 6.7 percent.

State officials say that Indiana added 5,400 private sector jobs in February and has added a total of 214,000 private sector jobs since July 2009, the high point for unemployment in the state.

While statewide unemployment numbers dropped, several Michiana counties saw their numbers go up.

The rate for Starke County jumped from 8.4 percent in January to 9.1 percent in February. A closer look at the numbers reveal some of the reasons behind the increase. In January, 862 people were reported as unemployed in the county. That number jumped to 944 people in February. While the number of people employed in the county stayed relatively steady from January to February, the number of people in the labor force increased by 80 workers, accounting for most of the unemployment increase.

The number of people in the labor force also grew in every other area county except for Pulaski County.
