Fans travel to Notre Dame for Sweet 16

Posted:

The Purcell Pavilion was packed with fans in attendance for the Sweet 16 round of the 2014 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. A majority of the fans were there to cheer on Notre Dame, but there were also a number of Oklahoma State, Kentucky, and Baylor fans scattered throughout the arena.

Baylor fan, Peaches Hahn made her way to Notre Dame from Groesbeck, Texas. It was a lengthy trip for her but one she did not mind at all.  "[I] drove to Waco which is about 45 miles. My friend and I boarded a plane at 6:00am," she said.  "[We] flew into Dallas, from Dallas to Chicago O'Hare and then rented a car and came over and we've been here since Thursday."

Others didn't fly and made the drive from Texas. One of those Baylor fans who did that was Lorena, Texas native Melody Grigsby. "We drove and it's about 11 hundred miles and about 18 hours," Grigsby said.

Hahn and Grigsby say that they would have traveled to any city to follow their team. Chicago, Illinois native Harold Green drove to Notre Dame with his family to cheer on Kentucky. "I actually used to coach Linnae Harper," Green said. "She's number 15 on the Kentucky Wildcats so anytime they're relatively close we always make the trip."

Both the Baylor and Kentucky fans say their experience has been great at Notre Dame and the community has been very friendly towards them. Waco, Texas native Cynthia Lewis says one of the best parts of her time in Notre Dame has been the cooler temperatures. "We love the weather because we've got such hot weather at home it's nice to see snow," Lewis said.

Baylor beat Kentucky 90-72. Baylor will play Notre Dame on Monday night after the Irish beat Oklahoma State 89-72. Hahn spoke about the upcoming Notre Dame and Baylor match up. "Kentucky beat us at the beginning of the year in four overtimes and you saw what just took place out there so we're not afraid to bring on Notre Dame," Hahn said.
