Michigan students show off skills at robotics competition

Students in Michigan put their math and science skills to the test Saturday.

It was for the FIRST Robotics Competition in St. Joseph.

Organizers say it gives hands-on training, to help get high school students interested in careers in engineering or technology.

Congressman Fred Upton was at the district competition to cheer on the students. He says, "What it does is it encourages high school students to really be involved in math and science. They use this unique system that includes sports, teamwork, working with other schools for real competition."

Upton says Michigan has more teams than any other state in the National Competition held in St. Louis in a few weeks.

The robotics team at Penn High School has also qualified to compete at the National Competition.
