Tax deadline is approaching but help is out there

Posted:

April is nearly upon us and that means the April 15th tax deadline is on the minds of those who have not filed yet. Liberty Tax in Elkhart owner Brian Conwell says March is usually a slow month for people filing taxes, but the number starts to rise as the month ends. "Next week will be a little busier and the last week will be pretty hectic," Conwell said.

Conwell says many of the people who have yet to file have not done so because they may think they will not be getting a return or they owe money. He says regardless of the situation the most important thing to do is still file. "Don't not file. Even if you owe and you don't think you can pay, at least file," Conwell said.  "You'll at least avoid the non-filing penalty."

The Internal Revenue Service is willing to help those who do owe money back if that is the case. The IRS will set up repayment plans for the people who need it. They also offer a number of free services to file your taxes. "In Michiana we have a number of different organizations that will do your taxes for free," IRS Spokesman Luis Garcia said. "These volunteers in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program are trained by the IRS."

If you make less than $40,000 a year you can use the Volunteer Tax Assistance Program. The Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library will be holding one of those sessions on April 5th. People will be helped on a first-come first-served basis.

The IRS has partnered with 14 software companies that provide free software to file taxes. In order to use this program you must make less than $58,000 a year. Users need to go to the IRS web site and click on "Free File."

There is still a little over two weeks until the April 15th deadline, but if you should miss filing on time, Conwell says it is not a rare incident to see. "A couple of years ago I think I did more returns the day after the deadline than I did on the deadline day so if you do miss it, you're not alone," he says.
