National Walking Day promotes exercise

If you noticed a lot of people walking Wednesday you were not the only one.

April 2nd is National Walking Day, an effort to promote exercise.  Health experts say walking 20-30 minutes each day can improve your health significantly.

It can also increase your bone density and decrease mental stress.

"It is one of the best medicines available to us and unlike other exercise it is very accessible," says Bridget Hardy a Fitness Specialist for Memorial Health and Lifestyle Center.  

Hardy says another benefit of walking is that you don't have to go to a gym.

"You don't need any equipment, you don't need any place to be, you can do it anywhere," says Hardy.

Walking can also reduce the risk of diabetes and colon cancer.
