UPDATE: Coroner says Michiana doctor died from fall in Colorado

Posted:

The Eagle County Coroner's Office says Dr. James McGrogan died from injuries suffered during a fall.  The announcement came Monday after McGrogan's body was found near Vail on April 3.

The body was reported to the Eagle County Sheriff's Department just after 1pm Thursday afternoon. Three skiers located the body in an ice fall below Booth Falls, just north of Vail. Booth Falls is about four and a half miles east of the trail that leads to the Eiseman Hut.

39-year-old McGrogan was reported missing back in March after he went ahead of some friends while hiking to the Eiseman Hut. The area of Booth Falls had been searched by crews on the ground and in the air during the five day search for McGrogan. The Eagle County Sheriff's Office, Vail Police Department and Vail Mountain Rescue Group worked together to recover the body.

The Coroner's Office says a cause of death has not yet been determined. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

McGrogran, a native of Chesterton, was an Emergency Room Doctor at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka.

FOX28 spoke to McGrogan's father Bill a few weeks ago when his son was first reported missing.  Then he told us, "I just wish he was here.  Wish I could talk to him."

The family was still holding out hope as crews searched in Colorado.  Bill McGrogan said if anyone could survive, it would be his son.

After the news spread Friday that Dr. McGrogan's body had been discovered we talked to employees at the ACE Hardware in Chesterton, Indiana.  That's where Bill McGrogan works.  There we were told in the past few weeks they'd been trying to distract Bill and keep his mind off all of this but today, knowing how hard it must be for the family, they didn't even try to call him.  An employee also said that "he didn't wish this on anybody."

Several members of the Chesterton Community are sending their thoughts and prayers to the McGrogans.  Friends of the family who we spoke to said this is a "very sad time"

Chuck Roth Jr said, "we were all hoping for the best."  Roth said Dr. McGrogan was a strong guy and he had a lot of supplies with him.  That's why Bill McGrogan had remained faithful too.  A few weeks ago talking about his son, he told us, "He's done a lot, he's run marathons and iron mans and all those things."

Jessie Mosher with the Eagle County Sheriff's Office in Colorado said three skiers found Dr. McGrogan's body in an area North of Vail Colorado.  She said until they have the final report from the coroner they won't know exactly what happened but she said, "it does appear that there was an accident and he could have fallen near this ice fall."

Dr. McGrogan and his friends were hiking to the Eiseman Hut north of Vail when he separated from the group and wasn't seen again.  Crews searched the area for days.  "Due to the location of where we located Mr. McGrogan it made it kinda difficult to locate him and during the time of the search and rescue there were just no signs of clues that pointed to his whereabouts," said Mosher.

We also contacted St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, that's where Dr. McGrogan worked, they released a statement saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. McGrogan's family today."
