Former ND Coach Digger Phelps leaving ESPN

Former Notre Dame head basketball coach Digger Phelps is leaving ESPN.  Phelps made the announcement during Monday night's "College GameDay." The show was on location outside the National Championship game taking place at AT&T Stadium.

"I spent 20 years at Notre Dame as a coach, and now 20 years here at ESPN doing a great job with all you people, and now it's time for me to move forward, and this will be my last time on TV," said Phelps on the broadcast.

"We wish Digger the very best as he explores his next chapter," ESPN said in a statement posted on their website.

While no longer head coach, Phelps has remained a big part of the Michiana and Notre Dame communities. He was inducted into the Notre Dame Basketball Ring of Honor on January 19, 2014, 40 years to the day after the team's win over a UCLA team on an 88 game winning streak. In the community, he's been part of a push to encourage more people to mentor kids in Michiana.

Phelps has also battled cancer twice, the most recent time in 2013 when he was treated for prostate cancer. He told FOX28's Tom Powell last July that he was cancer-free.
