UPDATE: 10 departments respond to house fire in Niles

Posted:

Everyone is safe after a house fire in Niles brought out 10 separate fire departments in support this morning.

The fire broke out just before 10:30 am in the basement of a residence in the 2300 block of M-140, just north of Ullery Rd. in Niles. While there were no injuries, crews proceeded with caution after locating a supply of ammunition near where the fire started in the basement.

The house's resident was still in the home when firefighters first arrived, and advised them of an electrical fire in the basement, which was causing some of the ammunition to explode. Officials on scene estimated there were approximately 5000 rounds located in the house.

Niles Charter Township Fire Chief, Gary Brovold says it can be difficult to get enough man power to fight a fire in the middle of the day since they have to rely on volunteers.  "Time of day is always a detriment for us," Brovold said, "because [in the] daytime like this, a lot of volunteer firefighters are working.  So it was an issue getting enough man power; We had to keep calling for additional box alarm levels to get enough man power here."

Since there were not any fire hydrants in the area, the Niles Township Fire Department requested mutual aid to supply water tankers to battle the blaze. Many of the departments in the area are volunteer and have their staff at their normal jobs during the day, making it necessary to request help from several stations. Approximately 30 firefighters responded in all.
