Rally held for Equal Pay Day

Tuesday marks "Equal Pay Day."  A day to raise awareness about the wage gap between men and women.

The date is symbolic.  It marks how far into the new year the average American woman works to earn what the average man did in the previous year.  The White House said full-time working women earn 77% of what their male counterparts make.

In Indiana women only make 73 cents for every dollar a man makes.  A rally was held Tuesday on the steps of the St. Joe County Courthouse for groups to stand up for equal pay.

Linda Baechle, CEO of North Central Indiana said, "it's huge to get younger women engaged in speaking out about equal pay because they're going to lose 1/2 million dollars in earnings over the course of their career."

Over in Goshen Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann was learning more about the chamber of commerces' work with small businesses.  We took the opportunity to ask her about the wage gap in the Hoosier state, she said, "certainly, I'm a huge supporter of women in the workforce and that equal work should equal equal pay. The state of Indiana's position is 'let's make sure the jobs are available.' Governor Pence has committed that job creation be job one of our administration and we've been working hard at that."

Supporters of equal pay were encouraged to wear red Tuesday to show how far women are "in the red" with their pay.
