Area police gear up for campaign against distracted driving

You've probably already seen them... the jarring new ads for a new campaign against distracted driving.

It's the first ever national campaign to crack down on distracted driving.

And it was launched by the Department of Transportation.

Police departments across the country and here at home will be cracking down from April 10th to April 15th.

Here at home Mishawaka Police say they will also be aggressively ticketing drivers who text and drive.

Lt. Tim Williams from the Mishawaka Police Department says, "Texting while driving is a very dangerous thing. As a matter of fact, it's becoming more dangerous than drunk driving. So, a person that texts while driving can simulate a person about.15 and above which is almost 2 times the legal limit."

For every 2 seconds you look away from the road, you double your risk of being in a car crash.

Currently, Indiana is one of 43 states that ban text messaging for drivers of all ages.
