Elkhart looking for financial help to fight crime

Elkhart's mayor Dick Moore announced in his state-of-the-city address that one of his top priorities is fighting crime.

Now the mayor is looking for some financial help from the US Department of Justice.  The city is applying for a 60-thousand dollar grant through "Project Safe Neighborhoods."

The primary goal is to use the money to tackle gun and gang related crimes.  "We really jumped at it as soon as we heard about it.  It's going to allow us some money for training, investigative training, for putting local groups of citizens together," said Mayor Moore.

Elkhart will be competing with about 90 other districts to win one of a dozen grants.
