Palm Sunday tornadoes remembered

April 11, 2014 marks the 49th anniversary of the Palm Sunday tornado outbreak in the Midwest.

More than 270 people died, thousands more were hurt, as dozens of tornadoes ripped across the region.

At least 79 of those deaths were here in Indiana. Elkhart County saw the highest number of deaths, at least 60 die. Most of those deaths came from two powerful tornadoes that ripped apart the Dunlap community.

FOX28, an ABC affiliate at the time of the storm, presented a special show about the storm the next day. You can watch that show in the clip above this story.

The Elkhart County Historical Museum will host a special presentation on the outbreak on Sunday, April 13. The museum is located at 304 W. Vistula Street in Bristol. A special collection will be taken during the presentation for tornado victims.
