South Bend Police Department hosts Award Ceremony

Posted:

The South Bend Police Department held its 12th annual Awards Ceremony on Sunday afternoon. Family and friends gathered at the South Bend Police Department Auditorium to see officers and civilians who work for the department be honored.

The awards were given out in recognition of the action taken for calls received during the 2013 year. There were several awards given out including the Chief's Award of Valor and Officer of the Year Award. The Officer of the Year Award was given to two officers, John Gast and Tim Wiley.

South Bend Police Department Uniform Division Chief Scott Ruszkowski says that this is a way of showing the officers how much their sacrifice in the line of duty is appreciated, even if the officers do not acknowledge the dangers of the job.

"Officers are recognized for what they did in the previous year but we continue to recognize them daily. I think this is just more outstanding, something above and beyond than the normal heroic actions that officers perform everyday," Ruszkowski said.

Some of the acts officers were recognized for were their response to the Iowa Street plane crash and to the stabbing death of young Shirley Mundia.
