Blazers want to play ball

Posted:

The Elkhart Central baseball team was supposed to play Mishawaka Monday night, but instead they were forced to practice inside because of a weather cancellation.

"It's pretty frustrating," said Blue Blazers senior Kyle Smith. "Its been a long winter and it seems like it's never going to end, but nothing we can do about it."

This is not the first time the reigning state champs have had to change plans. Since the winter has decided to move itself well into the spring this season, the team has spent a lot of time indoors practicing.

Blazers coach Steve Stutsman says the weather is hurting the development of his young team.

"I want these kids to start playing games," said Stutsman. "They need that experience and we're just not getting it in practice, but we're in the same boat as everyone else."

The development is important for this year's Blazers because they lost seven starters from their championship squad.

Only seniors Jesse Zepeda and saw the field during the Elkhart Central title run last year and now they are expected to lead this year's team.

"Every day is a competition," said Zepeda, a senior outfielder. "I mean you even compete against your own teammates, that's how it is. Every day you get better. It's a mindset you have."

The two seniors are hoping they can prove some of the doubters wrong who think they lost too much talent to do anything in the post-season.

"People think we're not the same, like they're going to run over us. Well, they're not, we're going to give them a fight," said Zepeda. "I'm excited for this season."

That is once the weather actually allows them to show what they can do.
