South Bend recruiting more firefighters


The South Bend Fire Department is looking for firefighters and is really hoping to diversity that reflects that of the city.     

At a recruiting event, Tuesday the Fire Department said the job is safer than it has been in the past due to new technology.

Firefighters of today actually perform more medical runs that responding to fires.

And not as many are interested in being volunteer firefighters as have been in the past.

"They have to want to serve the community.  They have to have a love for the job.  This is a great job.  They have to really want to do it.  It's a job you can't take for granted.  It's a job.  It's your life," says Assistant South Bend Fire Chief, John Cortheir.

You have to be between the ages of 21 and 35 at the time of being sworn in and have a high school diploma or GED.
