Benton Township looking to replace some emergency vehicles

Nobody likes it when their taxes go up, but some officials in Benton Township hope the public will support their request for more money.

The police and fire departments are looking to replace parts of their fleet. They're hoping to purchase new fire trucks along with several new marked and unmarked police cars.

To do that, trustees would have to put a one-time tax on the ballot, and voters would have to approve it.

Benton Charter Township Chief of Police, Vincent Fetke says, "It's very important that for cost effectiveness due to the age and operation of the vehicles that we look at replacing them."

The reaction from the crowd was mixed. Some support the idea. Others simply don't want to pay more taxes.

The police chief says some of the older vehicles are getting too costly to maintain and it would be smarter to replace them.

Tuesday evening was just the first reading of the proposal.
