A man suspected of robbing a gas station in South Bend earlier this month is now in police custody. South Bend Police are crediting the arrest to a clue they found at the scene of the crime: the suspect's wallet and state ID.

On April 7, police responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Phillips 66 on the 3400 block of west Western Ave. Upon arrival, police say they discovered the wallet and state ID of Marrell Lee, 22,  of Chicago, IL, which they suspect he dropped while committing the robbery.

Police took a few days to locate Lee, who they say recently moved to South Bend from Chicago, but were able to find and arrest him, thanks in no small part to what he left behind at the gas station.

"The SBPD encourages all robbery suspects to leave identification behind at the crime scene," said Capt. Phil Trent.
