Charges filed against former SMC employee accused of peeping into students' bathroom

Charges have been filed against a former Saint Mary's College employee accused of theft and peeping into the bathroom of a student residence hall.

73-year-old David Summerfield has been charged with Felony Theft for allegedly stealing clothing from a student laundry room, and with voyeurism, a Class B Misdemeanor, for allegedly spying into the fourth floor restroom of Le Mans Hall.

In the criminal affidavit, Summerfield admitted to drilling holes in the ceiling of the showers of the fourth floor restroom and looking through them from the attic above. He also admitted that he had begun looking through these holes in 2013. Police believe Summerfield was viewing students through these holes periodically until April 8, 2014.

Summerfield was arrested on Tuesday, after an investigation conducted by the St. Joseph County Special Victims Unit. His actions were initially reported by a fellow maintenance employee, who notified school officials. Summerfield has since been fired from Saint Mary's College.

Summerfield has posted bond and been released.
