SBPD using new technology to find stolen cars

South Bend Police have some new technology to fight crime.  They've outfitted a car with a high tech license plate reader.  It has a camera that recognizes and interprets license plates.  All the squad car has to do is drive in traffic or through parking lots and it picks up all the license plates it passes.

South Bend Police Captain Phil Trent says the goal is to find stolen cars.

"In 2013 we saw an uptick in motor vehicle thefts," Trent says.  "We saw the relevance of having a license plate reader to do just that, comb the streets for stolen vehicles."  The department has one license plate reader now.  They're hoping to add two more.  We're told the system will be closely guarded to protect privacy.
