Plenty of people were out and about Saturday afternoon at Central Park in Mishawaka. Some parents were there with their children, others were walking their dog and some were taking a scenic walk along the river. The number of people visiting Central Park could see an increase as the park is set to be renovated in the near future. The new Central Park is expected to have a new playground, more pavilions, a system of inner trails and possibly a splash pad.

South Bend resident James Vannatter made his first visit to Central Park with his three children. He says he is looking forward to the changes that are coming. "I think it would be a plus, one hundred percent, for the kids and for families to come out," he said.

The new park would feature five pavilion areas. Mishawaka resident Dave White says this would help to fill a need in the community. "There really isn't any good places to have picnics," he said. "There's that one place over there with the little pavilion but you need more room."

Another addition would be a system of inner trails. South Bend resident Linda Clauson was at the park with more than ten family members. She says the new trails would be used by her and her family. "I walk here all the time. And when my grandchildren who live out of town and we always come over for a walk," Clauson said.

The is also a proposed splash pad that could be featured. It won't only be children who would taken advantage of that. White says it is convenient for him and his wife on bike rides. "It's great when we're out bike riding and swing by and go 'I think I'll take a quick dip,'" White said.

The new playground built would be the largest one in the Mishawaka park system. South Bend Rex Owen and his 13-month-old son Jaxon, were on the swings, Saturday afternoon. He says he is excited about the changes set to take place. "Being a first time dad I never realized how important it was to have parks and things like that available for families and our communities," Owens said.

The budget for the project is still being finalized. An exact date has not been set as to when the project will break ground. The project is expected to start later this year and will take about a year to complete. Owen says the wait will be worth it. "Best things come to those who wait," he said. "That's my philosophy on it."

Beside the new attractions the renovation will included working on the landscaping, roadways and parking lots.
