Police investigating early morning home invasion in South Bend

St. Joseph County Police are still trying to determine what happened in an alleged home invasion early Monday morning in South Bend.

The call reporting a break-in came into police a little after 3:00am. When police arrived, they say they found an 84-year-old male and his 46-year-old caretaker both battered. Their injuries both required hospitalization but were not life-threatening.

The man was sleeping at the time of the alleged break-in and could not offer much description of events, but claimed that about $1000 in cash was missing from his wallet. The woman claimed there was a single male attacker who broke in, and that she had the deadbolt in place on the front door. However, police could not find any trace of forced entry and are trying to determine the reliability of the information they have been given.

St. Joseph County Police say they will be conducting a second round of interviews with everyone involved Monday. At this time, they have no suspects identified or in custody, but do not believe this to be a random incident. Lt. Matt Blank said nearby residents should not be worried about this possibly being the first in a string of incidents in the area at this time.
