Local counties and cities see drop in unemployment rate

Posted:
Fewer people in Michiana are unemployed, according to the latest local employment numbers released Monday.  According to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the state's unemployment rate fell to 5.9% in March, its lowest point since July 2008. It has declined by 2% over the last year, the third largest decline in the nation.

Several local counties and cities have seen even larger drops in unemployment than the state in the last year. Elkhart County's 5.8% is 2.5% lower than March of 2013. St. Joseph County's rate dropped 2.4% to 7.1% in the same period. The city of Elkhart's unemployment rate has dropped 3.3% since last March to 6.9%. South Bend unemployment rate dropped 3.1% to 8.0% this March.

The state added 3,200 private sector jobs in March. The state says the total labor force has grown by more than 25,000 in the first quarter of 2014. Claims for unemployment insurance have also dropped and are at their lowest levels since 2007.
